This post, though not my first, is the first official post of my blog under its new domain!
Why Kicking-Cans?
Cuz it’s funny, and it’s a nod that working on this blog is sometimes just a way to avoid finishing other projects. Maybe you’re like me, and reading this blog is letting you avoid finishing other projects?
That’s really it. I like the alliteration, and it reminds me of procrastination.
Site Setup in Cloudflare
I am running this blog through Cloudflare Pages. What I didn’t know was how many tools Cloudflare provides for free as part of their website management suite once you have a proper domain name registered with them. They have tools like DDoS protection and WAF built in by default, as well as HTTP to HTTPS redirects that can all be enabled or managed with the push of a button. It really is quite nice.
Cloudflare also made the domain name search, and purchasing process easy, and it is simple to manage my contact info, payment preferences, etc. through them as well. For what it’s worth. I give Cloudflare two thumbs up 👍👍.
Where is this Blog Going?
Quite honestly, I don’t know yet. I’ve been reading a lot lately about people transitioning to the web being a personal experience for them, as a reaction to all the AI nonsense, and mass content generation. I think all the new generative slop has just highlighted the problem, and really put the spotlight on people’s desire to be individual, to be heard, to experience what other people have created, etc. I like that this blog is my space to post musings, or to write up guides for cool tech projects I am working on. It also lets me share things I am learning, and the writing process helps to solidify my understanding, and helps me to develop the vocabulary tools to communicate technical topics with others, which is a valuable skill.
Side note, I have been reading Pierce Brown’s Red Rising series, and an idea that comes up repeatedly is the “Shout into the Void”. In his books, the idea is that all we have in this life is one shout into the void. History will forget who you were, but it may remember your shout, if it is loud enough. I personally think there is a lot more to life than just a striving to make a mark on the world, and that this world is not all that there is to live for, but this blog does remind me of that. I don’t know if it will ever really go anywhere, so in some sense, my writings are just shouts into the void. Maybe someone will read these posts and enjoy them, or get to learn something new, or be helped along on their homelab journey, or just be encouraged. If that is all this blog ever does, that will be a win in my book.
