This year, I have been experimenting with two new processes for photography. One is using a more restrictive lens, the other is color grading and post processing. This is the first time that I have branched out from the kit lenses that came with my camera originally, and stuck to it for an extended period of time. Instead of the 18-55 and 55-200 that I have used for years, I tried to commit to using a 17-35 lens. In some ways, I have found it to be more restrictive. But in that restriction I have also found new creative avenues. I love the sense of openness and space that the 17-35 provides, and it is fantastic for portrait photography as well. The lens is also able to focus from 10 inches away, which makes for a capable macro lens as well.
For color grading and post processing, I considered it dishonest to edit a photo to make it look like anything other than what was captured in camera, plus maybe a little bit of contrast, exposure or saturation. This year, I am stepping into learning the post processing tools. For some photos, I feel as though I overdid the processing, and ended up with something that looks unnatural while chasing a particular vibe or nostalgia. But I am learning, and I think it has been a net positive, and has allowed me more creative freedom with photos. It allows some flexibility, and can correct for framing and lighting mistakes. It has allowed me to adjust photos from merely OK, to ones that are now my personal favorites.
Without further ado, please enjoy a collection of my personal favorites from Summer 2025.

This Duck was shot on iPhone 15 Pro Max at 5 times zoom in Halide. It doesn’t look as crisp as many of the other photos, but I still enjoy it.
